I wanted to share this TED Talk by Stuart Shankar on Self-regulation and learning.  I found it very inspiring as I researched and learnt about my Genius Hour Inquiry question.

October 5 Blog Post

Today I learned how to use IMovie to create a trailer for my Genius Hour Blog.  It was interesting to use the images and information i researched to create and Imovie. I'm still working on completing the trailer and excited to post it to my blog.

Looking at the research i've done so far, i've realized that there are many similarities between what parents and school personals consider to be important in fostering self-regulation in children.  There needs to be open communication between parents and school personals regarding students behaviour, emotions and development.  There needs to be clear and consistent expectations for the students.

Today I've learned about many different tools like Audioboo, Paper.li, Emaze that can all be very useful ways of working with and teaching students.

From here, I'm going to complete my Imovie and my TED Talk on the importance of self-regulation during the early years.

Today, I continued to research of my topic of self-regulation in the primary grades.  I researched the school personals view on the importance of self-regulation. According to an article I read in the Huffington Post, "kindergarten teachers rank self-regulation as one of the most important skills for school readiness"(Golinkoff R. et al, 2014).  the articles continued to talk about different forms of self-regulation that are important for students to demonstrate:

Emotional:  Having emotional self-regulation enables students to efficiently express and experience their emotions.

Behavioural: Having behavioural self-regulation enables students to be in control of their actions.

Cognitive:  Having cognitive self-regulation allows students to follow through with directions given to them by their educators.

Consequently, what I learnt today is how both parents and school personals believe it it really important to instil effective self-regulation techniques in children.

Reflecting back on what I have learnt about myself today:

Today I've learnt to use different forms of technology like Powtoon and Animoto as a means to further present what I've learnt about my topic on self-regulation.  I am still experimenting with the forms of technology and am excited to be able to combine the information I research with these technology programs.

Next steps:  I am going to combine the research I've done till now on my Genius Hour question and create a movie trailer.

Reflective blog post

Through researching about self-regulation, I've noticed that many researchers believe that self-regulation really impacts students well-being and over ability to express emotions in a socially acceptable manner.  Both parents and school personals need to work together and come up with guidelines that they consider effective for their students.  Today, I've looked at research that considers the parents perspective on self-regulation and what they consider important for their children's development. I'm focusing my searches on the young children (Kindergarten to grade 2).  I'm going to continue to consider other techniques parents consider important and then look at the educators perspective on how to foster self-regulation in children.

Copyright

TPACK Teacher Quest:  DG1 Copyright

Copyright laws govern the work an individual creates.  Through copyright an individual is given full authority over the product or document they create. In order to be able to use work someone else has produced; permission from the author is required.  The Creative Commons have put together 6 licenses that outline ways an author can allow others to use the work they created.

The important thing I think to teach students is to be creative and try and produce their own unique work.  At the same time, if students do need to refer to other authors creations; then it is important to give the producer of the materials the due respect and value they deserve for their hard work.  It is important to show students how to use work that has a creative commons licence.

Genius Hour Blog Post #1:

  • Genius Hour topic:

- How might parents/caregivers and school personals collaborate to facilitate students development of self-regulation?

  • Goals for this project at this stage:
-To research what parents and school personals find to be the most important techniques that aid in the development of student self-regulation.

  • Experiences so far and next steps:
-While searching online I noticed that a lot of research has been conducted in understanding the importance of self-regulation. There is a debate about whether self-regulation is important in student success or only a focus on academics is sufficient. What i need to do next is look at the different view points about self-regulation and its importance. Next I need to see how parents as well as school personals can encourage and promote self-regulation as a team. How they can work together to facilitate self-regulation in students.

Welcome to my blog

Live happily. Laugh everyday. Learn with a passion!

This is my first time creating a blog. I am supper excited to play around with the different tools and features that are available for me to use in order to create this blog. I truly believe in being a lifelong learner and think this is a great way to connect and share ones ideas and resources.

Learning about Genius Hour:

Genius Hour is when you are given the time to do what you are passionate about.  It is during this time that you critically think about what interests you and what you would like to further inquire about and learn. During this time, students are more focused and motivated to learning as they are intrinsically doing what they want to do.  Giving students choices in what they would like to learn about; creates success and gives them a sense of pride in their accomplishments.
